Assays / Trace
Metals/ Iodine
It is outside the remit of this handbook to discuss the role
of iodine in thyroid function and the rationale for measurements
of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyroid stimulating hormone
(TSH) etc. However, it is important to note that the use of iodine-containing
antimicrobial wash solutions following surgery can lead to iodine
toxicity manifested as hyperthyroidism. Measurements of total serum
iodine can be of value in assessing iodine toxicity. Iodine deficiency
was detected in a child who had a delayed rate of growth after introduction
of a restrictive diet for purported food sensitivity.
The reference range for iodine in serum is 0.32-0.63
µmol/L
