This Laboratory was established with both NHS and academic roles in endocrinology and provides a comprehensive analytical and advisory service, particularly in paediatric endocrinology, pituitary and thyroid disease and reproductive medicine. There are strong links with the Department of Medicine at the University of Birmingham (Head of Department Professor M Sheppard) with the regular review of cases, service developments and research. Staff have Honorary status within the Department of Medicine. CPA accreditation has been achieved with Clinical Biochemistry and there is a full programme of quality assurance. There is an active research programme and recent introductions to the assay repertoire include IGFBP-3 and equilibrium dialysis free T4. In collaboration with the Department of Medicine, the Laboratory offers a national service for the measurement of thyroglobulin as a tumour marker. Enquiries and comments on any aspect of the service are welcome.
