Newcastle RVI Lipid and Cardiovascular Biomarkers Laboratory

Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)

The Newcastle SAS laboratory offers a range of specialist lipid investigations. These include beta quantification (lipoprotein fractionation by ultracentrifugation), which allows direct measurement of LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and is particularly useful in the diagnosis of dysbetalipoproteinaemia.  Plasma sterol measurement is also available for investigation of sitosterolaemia and other sterol disorders. Measurement of apolipoprotein A1, B and lipoprotein (a) are also offered.  The SAS diagnostic service includes an advisory function performed and co-ordinated by the lead scientist, supported by expert chemical pathologists. An active research and development programme is in operation involving collaboration with clinical and academic service users.
