Protein Reference Units

Five Protein Reference Units were designated at the inception of the SAS in 1973. Two units have since closed with retirements and changes in direction, but the other three units have continued to offer their specialised assay and advisory service through changes in location and directorships. All of the units are fully integrated within their host departments which offer a comprehensive range of investigatory protocols in allergy, autoimmunity, immunochemistry and oncology.

For full details of the clinical application and interpretation of the assays, reference should be made to the PRU Handbook of Clinical Immunochemistry, (7th edition 2001) ISBN 0-948722-09-6.

For some analytes the assay designation was restricted to particular clinical contexts; where appropriate these are given in italics.
