Manchester Royal Infirmary Vitamin D Service

Royal Infirmary

The Department of Medicine at Manchester has a long history of research into calcium and bone metabolism, with a special interest in vitamin D, dating from the 1950s. Assays for vitamin D were developed by Professor Barbara Mawer (former Director) and Dr Jacqueline Berry and have been performed on a routine basis since 1980. The laboratory has an international reputation for assays and research and has published extensively on all aspects of vitamin D. There is an ongoing programme of research and development. The laboratory is accredited to the following quality management system standards ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2003 and meets the performance targets set by the Vitamin D External Quality Assessment Scheme. Detailed individual interpretation, which utilises the clinical expertise of the Department, is given for each result (subject to sufficient initial information being received). The laboratory is also able to offer non-SAS assays for PTH by special arrangement.
