| The Newcastle SAS laboratory has existed since
the foundation of the SAS in 1973 to meet both Health Service
and academic needs within endocrinology. Consequently it offers
an extensive menu of SAS designated assays. Its major focus
concerns the investigation of thyroid, pituitary and adrenal
disease. The SAS designated assays performed are: thyroglobulin,
TBII,
IGF-I, ACTH,
PTH,
25(OH)
cholecalciferol and calcitonin.
In addition, non-SAS specialist endocrine assays are also undertaken
in the laboratory. The SAS diagnostic service includes an advisory
function performed and co-ordinated by the director and deputy
director, supported by Clinical Associates who are expert endocrinologists
and frequent users of the service themselves. An active research
and development programme is in operation involving collaboration
with Health Service users and Medical School academic staff. |
