The SAS Trace element Unit is part of
the Division of Laboratory Medicine at Southampton University
Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT) and has CPA accreditation.
We use inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)
and atomic absorption spectroscopy to measure an extensive
range of trace elements and stable isotopes in biological
fluids and tissues. These include chromium, cobalt, mercury,
selenium, iodine, urine uranium and measurement of lead isotope
ratios for sourcing lead, lead bullets and shot. We are setting
up a procedure to speciate arsenic in urine. We provide a
comprehensive analytical repertoire together with an advisory
service for patient management, clinical and environmental
studies and collaborate in research investigations..
We have a long track record in research in the Trace Element
field, often in collaborative ventures, to investigate the
biological importance of trace elements. We have made a significant
contribution to developing robust analytical methods with
fast turnaround, appropriate for the clinical situation. |
